Longview Fusion Energy Systems Named Key Contributor for Multiple FIRE Grants

Livermore, California, January 22, 2025 — Longview Fusion Energy Systems is proud to announce its participation as a key contributor to two of the six teams selected to receive awards under the Fusion Innovation and Research in Energy (FIRE) program.

The FIRE program, established by the Department of Energy, is designed to bring together industry players, national laboratories, and academics to tackle the most pressing challenges in fusion energy. This collaborative initiative provides critical funding and support to advance transformative fusion technologies with the goal of accelerating the development of commercial fusion power plants.

Led by Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) and General Atomics (GA), the selected teams represent critical efforts to accelerate the development of transformative technologies for commercial fusion energy.

The SRNL-led team focuses on developing the fuel cycle essential for fusion energy commercialization. Under the FC-FIRE Collaborative, SRNL is working with a broad team of national laboratories, universities, and industry partners — including Longview Fusion Energy Systems — to advance tritium fuel cycle technologies critical for commercial fusion power plants. Longview's contributions to this effort include providing insights from its power plant design work and supporting the development of tritium handling and fuel cycle systems tailored for commercial fusion energy.

The GA-led initiative is centered on advancing key components of fusion energy systems, particularly in the areas of plasma confinement and reactor materials. Longview's contributions include critical input from its power plant design and engineering work, particularly in areas that complement GA's research objectives.

"We are thrilled to be part of not just one, but two groundbreaking teams selected under the FIRE collaborative awards," said Valerie Roberts, Chief Business Officer at Longview Fusion Energy Systems. "This recognition underscores our commitment to advancing fusion energy technology and our ability to collaborate with leading national laboratories and industry partners. These partnerships are vital to realizing the promise of fusion energy as a clean, safe, and economical power source."
