Longview–LLNL partner on fusion modelling

Longview Announces Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

LIVERMORE, Calif., Sept. 18, 2024 — Longview Fusion Energy Systems and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), further advancing the development of commercial laser fusion energy.

The CRADA formalises collaboration between Longview and LLNL on fusion modelling and simulation work that directly supports the design of Longview's Market Entry Plant — a 440 MW commercial laser fusion power plant targeted for operation in the early 2030s.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is home to the National Ignition Facility (NIF), which in December 2022 achieved fusion ignition — producing more energy from fusion than the laser energy delivered to the target, a historic first. Longview's commercial power plant design builds directly on this proven physics.
